It is with deep sadness that Gotherington CC announce the passing of our long-standing club stalwart Bill Pullen. Bill passed away peacefully at his home in Alderton on the 18th April.
Bill was a real Gloucestershire character. In addition to being one of our players who helped reform the Club in 1965, Bill subsequently acted as the Club’s scorer throughout the 1970s and continued to support us as Vice President up to his passing. Bill was also a very well known local folk and blues performer. He had an extensive knowledge of Gloucestershire folk songs.
Many of our present players and supporters will remember Bill’s fab musical performance at both our 1st trip to Windsor Castle to play The Royal Household CC and also at our 2016 inaugural home game against the same opposition.
Bill was a lover of other sports besides cricket being a loyal supporter of both Bishops Cleeve FC and Cheltenham Town FC and local Rugby Union.
We will all miss Bill.
(A search for Bill Pullen will find videos of his singing on youtube)
It is with great sadness that Gotherington CC announce the sad passing of John Greenall at the age of 85. John moved to Gotherington at the age of 5 from his birthplace in Bishops Cleeve. Always a keen sportsman, John started to play cricket for Gotherington after the war and was a member of the Gotherington CC team who played Gloucestershire CCC in Gotherington in 1948. John played regularly for the Club throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s (after the 1965 restarting of the Club). John’s stories of the Club’s away games when the players would often stop at 4 or more pubs on the way back to The Shutters were legendary. John had a fantastic knowledge of the village and his book (written in conjunction with Bill Spragg) titled ‘John Greenall’s Gotherington’ is a must read for anyone who loves this village. John will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
The Club sends its condolences to John’s wife Pam, his children Jonathan & Lorraine and family.
