Captains Report 2017

Captains Report 2017

Another successful year of cricket for Gotherington village. A personal milestone for me in my 20th year. An enjoyable year although player availability a concern with close to 50 different players turning out to play during the season. Many other clubs finding it difficult to field Sunday teams including larger clubs such as Bayshill and Apperley who both cried off this year due to not being able to field a side.
We had some fantastic highlights against some excellent opposition. The fixtures were yet again superb so a big thank you to Edward Gillespie for his hard work during the off season to ensure a full card.
We started well with a 3 run win over St Stephens on a cold, wet and windy day in April. Woodmancote away saw us up against their competitive Australian overseas player, Josh Dowd. Fine individual performances from James Sharp and a quick fire 71 from Tom Mynett saw us win against our local rivals.
The stand out fixture against the Royal Household proved to be a historic occasion for GCC as we won convincingly at Windsor Castle on a swelteringly hot day. GCC batting first scoring 171, James Layton Hill scoring 92, the backbone of the innings. Cue a fine bowling performance from Jamie Layton Hill and Tim Hearn (4 wickets each) to skittle the home side out for a meagre 46. A great day out with excellent hospitality.
Tom Mynett featured again against Stowell Park scoring 68 when batting second. GCC chasing down their total of 180 with ten overs to spare. The following week we were able to complete the double over Woodmancote as Chris Hendy Isaac and Chris Newton chipped in with runs. At 6ft 3, Olly Mallory bowled well hitting the pitch hard and taking 3 wickets.

Elmley Castle was the backdrop for another season highlight this time an unbeaten opening partnership of 220 for GCC. Alex Cleaves (115) and Tom Mynett (88) securing another win for GCC. New visitors Standard Club of Paris visited Freeman Field as part of their tour and were beaten by a young GCC side with the evergreen Rob Sharp reaching 50.

I have lots of people to thank over the season for various contributions. All the supporters, members and 100 club participants who support the club from behind the scenes. Brain and Yvonne for everything they do for the club and the village as a whole. Over 50 juniors registered and playing regular cricket is an amazing achievement that benefits children from all over north Cheltenham. The coaches that help out on a Saturday morning (Craig, Ben, Dave et al).
Brian for all his hard work on our pitch and the countless hours he puts in for the club in his role as treasurer. We have made several key investments for the club this year, Brian sourced all of this and through the Parish Council we are very lucky to have the equipment.
Thank you to all.
